Building cities that balance growth with livability, safety, and sustainability is NFABC’s priority.
At Neighbors for a Better California (NFABC), we believe that cities thrive when they grow with their residents, not in spite of them. Our vision is simple but powerful: to promote smart, community-centered planning that respects local voices, protects neighborhood character, and ensures a truly equitable future.
What Makes a Community Resilient?
Resilience means more than just surviving rapid change — it means planning for the future in a way that strengthens neighborhoods, not erases them.
We envision:
Homes that families can afford without overcrowding neighborhoods
Infrastructure that supports growth before it’s forced upon us
Open space, schools, emergency services, and public safety that aren’t stretched to the limit
A transparent planning process where residents have a real say in the decisions affecting their daily lives
Local Control Matters.
Recent bills like AB 647 and SB 423 remove decision-making power from local communities, allowing Sacramento to override long-standing zoning protections. These bills don’t promote fairness — they promote developer-driven overreach, often with minimal affordability requirements.
We support planning that reflects:
Local demographic needs
Infrastructure capacity
Environmental sustainability
Neighborhood character
Cities should have the flexibility to meet housing goals their own way — with community-led input, not top-down mandates.
A Better Way Forward.
We want California to build more housing — but it must be done intelligently. That means:
Prioritizing underused commercial or industrial zones over single-family neighborhoods
Expanding affordability for middle-income families, not just ticking boxes for “low-income” set-asides
Encouraging development near existing transit and jobs, rather than forcing density where it doesn’t belong
We believe in growth that makes sense — and benefits everyone, not just a few.
